STAN LAUREL STATUE UNVEILED
Stan Laurel, half of the enduring film comedy duo Laurel & Hardy, was not born in Bishop Auckland but he was baptised at the local church & went to Bishop Auckland Grammar School. His father Arthur Jefferson was the manager of the Eden Theatre in the town. On Saturday 30th August 2008, Stan's niece Nancy Wardell unveiled the statue, which stands on the site of the Eden Theatre, known as "Theatre Corner." The statue, which shows Stan in typical pose, was designed by Tyneside artist & Sculptor Bob Olley. Musical accompaniment by the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings.
